The year marked Hugh's return to full-band touring after spending much of 1999 playing solo. A March–April UK run with Sumyunguise previewed songs from *Hi Fi* alongside earlier solo and Stranglers material, with a changing acoustic section between full-band sets. Released on 2 October, *Hi Fi* was followed by an extensive UK club tour and three dates in the Netherlands; the autumn shows paired a solo acoustic set with a full-band performance. Other appearances included the Roundhouse fundraising gala, where Hugh performed with Jools Holland's orchestra and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason.

Sold-out show with Sumyunguise, filmed for a seven-minute Reuters Television feature distributed internationally. In Jim Drury's interview at the venue, Hugh revealed the title *Hi Fi*, said recording was roughly one-third to halfway complete during the tour and discussed a tentative July release (the album was ultimately released in October). He described Sumyunguise as a four-piece without keyboards: a second guitarist he had known in Bath for 15 years, plus a rhythm section introduced as having worked with Moby. The show format placed a changing solo-acoustic section between full-band sets; the tour previewed new material while mixing older solo and Stranglers songs. Hugh also identified one new song as a protest song
