About the Burning Up Time Gigography

This is a community-built concert archive for The Stranglers and Hugh Cornwell, assembled from the long-running Gigography research on the themeninblack forums. Its aim is to preserve useful evidence—not to make uncertain history look tidier than it is.

Scope

The Stranglers section currently covers 1974–1990, ending when Hugh Cornwell left the band. The Hugh Cornwell section continues the chronology from 1991 as a separate solo archive. This is a practical editorial boundary, not a statement that The Stranglers’ later history is unimportant.

Who makes it

The archive is maintained as the Burning Up Time Gigography, drawing on contributions and corrections from the themeninblack forum community. Individual memories and discoveries remain credited in the underlying records where that information is available.

Sources and evidence

The forum research threads are the starting point. Entries may also cite tickets, contemporary press, venue histories, recordings, photographs, artist timelines and specialist gig archives. A specific contemporary or primary record normally carries more weight than an unsourced database listing.

Cancellations, doubtful dates, venue conflicts and non-performance appearances are kept when they explain the historical record. They are labelled in the notes rather than silently removed. A listing means “present in the documented chronology”; it does not always mean a concert definitely took place.

If you have a ticket, advert, diary entry, photograph or first-hand correction, please contact the project through the forum. Please include enough detail for somebody else to check the claim.

Use of research tools

Software-assisted and AI-assisted tools may be used to locate candidates, compare dates, structure material and test the website. They are not treated as historical sources. Claims should remain traceable to the archive evidence, and automated changes are checked against the rendered site before publication.
